The Dungtse Lhakhang in Paro was built by Thangtong Gyelpo. Popoular legend is that a gigantic ogress plagued the area and Thangtong Gyelpo subdued her by constructing the Chorten-lhakhang, as Chortens or stupas were traditionally likened to huge stakes that could pin down negative energy and influence. The hillock behind the temple is said to be the head of the ogress. The structure is slightly unusual in that it combines elements of both a Chorten and a Lhakhang, and the only other structure with similar architecture being the National Memorial Chorten in Thimphu. The name ‘Dungtse’ which translates as ‘Conch point,’ derives from the cylindrical or conch shape of the top structure.
